What is RSSI

RSSI, Received signal strength Indication, is an important parameter in radio signals.RSSI indicates how weak the signal is at the receiving end, and it is a measure of radio energy. In the mobile network, we will measure the RSSI value of the base station or AP to calculate the distance of the cell phone, RSSI is generally expressed as a negative number, and the size of its value directly reflects the current level of signal strength.

dBm as an indicator of signal strength (reception)

On the receiving end, signal strength is usually understood as the sensitivity of the signal to the receiver. In this case, we need to remember a few basic concepts about dBm values:

This is always a negative number: we are not talking about quantity here, but about metrics. This is because 0 dBm (1 mW) means the sensitivity of the 100% - an impossible level. The actual signal level is always below 0 dBm.
Signal sensitivity ranges from 0 dBm to -128 dBm. the closer the number is to zero, the stronger the signal. For example, -30 dBm is stronger than -60 dBm.
Again, since dB and dBm don't scale like most measurements (weight, length, etc.) - they are non-linear and increasing: the difference between 30 dBm and -60 dBm may be no greater than the difference between -60 dBm and -65 dBm.
Typically, the effective dBm values on the receiving end range from -10 (strongest signal) to -90 (weakest signal).

How RSSI is used for ranging

In RSSI localization, two main features are utilized:

  1. Signal strength decays with distance. That is, in general, when the receiving end is farther away from the transmitting end, the received signal strength attenuates. If the signal strength of a number of transmitters adjacent to the current location can be measured, the current location can be inferred from the degree of attenuation of these signal strengths.
  2. Wireless signals spread spherically under unobstructed conditions. Therefore, the current position can be calculated by solving the equation by measuring the signal strength of a number of transmitters adjacent to the current position.

The RSSI positioning method is more suitable for occasions that do not require a high degree of accuracy, because its positioning accuracy can generally only reach within a few tens of meters.

Motion Detection Improves Label Life

Find labels directly with handhelds

Without a locator system installed, it is still possible to find a tag using only the handheld.
